The Kings College London created the first UK-based study, published The Lancet Psychiatry, which found 31% experienced a traumatic experience during childhood, and those who were exposed to trauma were twice as likely as their peers to have a rang of Mental Health Disorders. With 3 in 4 people under the age of 18 suffering from a Mental Health Issue.
Senior researcher Professor Andrea Danese from the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) says: ‘Our findings should serve as a wake-up call – childhood trauma is a public health concern yet trauma-related disorders often go unnoticed. Young people with PTSD are falling through the gaps in care and there is a pressing need for better access to mental health services. Child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) need to make more resources available to address the needs of traumatized young people.’
I believe if we can spot the signs and give children the right Mental Health Support they need as quick as possible, we can try to prevent them from developing serious Mental Health issues later in life.
With over 4 years experience working within a school setting for a charity based organization I supported many children and young people around London. Apart of this charity, we would see children who were referred to us via CAHMS supporting their organization, as such I would use use short term therapy with children using a variety of methods including Sand tray therapy, Art work and creating their own story’s to talking and playing games.
